Prospects for renewable marine fuels – A multi-criteria decision analysis of alternative fuels for the maritime sector
In order to reduce the environmental and climate impact of shipping, in the short and long term, the introduction of alternative fuels is required. The choice of marine fuel warrants an analysis of a range of different factors such as price, availability, safety, environmental impact, policies etc. This study assesses the prospect of renewable fuels in the shipping sector by conducting a multi-criteria decision analysis of selected alternative fuels with a panel of shipping sector related stakeholders. The fuels assessed in this study include liquified natural gas (LNG), methanol produced from natural gas and from biomass, and hydrogen.
