Background

For a successful green transition, new and research-based knowledge is paramount. In this Nordic-Baltic initiative, the focus is on three topics which are all important in the work towards a just green transition.

  • The first topic calls for new insights on energy efficient, resilient, and sustainable food systems.
  • The second topic addresses the importance of including gender perspectives in the green transition, for it to be just, effective, and long-lasting.
  • The third topic concerns representation and legitimacy, focusing on democratic engagement and citizen-involvement in the green transition.

The research funding agencies have allocated their financial contribution to one or more of the three topics of the call. This means that a part of the available budget is earmarked to each of the three topics, whereas the co-funding from NordForsk and the Nordic Council of Ministers will be used across the topics based on strategic decisions by the call committee.

Each application must be submitted to only one of the three topics of the call, and the selected topic must be indicated in the application form. Each topic of the call is a separate competition arena, where the call committee makes a funding decision by selecting between the proposals submitted to the topic and within the earmarked budget that is allocated to the topic. The applicant must ensure that all project partners that apply for funding are eligible to receive funding under the topic to which they are applying.

Aim of the call and thematic framework

The Green Transition call focuses on central features of our societies, such as equality, democratic engagement, participation, and representation. Moreover, it addresses an urgent need for the Nordic-Baltic region to find more energy efficient and sustainable food systems.

The call provides an opportunity for researchers to investigate different practices within and between the Nordic and Baltic regions, through comparative approaches to identify similarities, differences, and common challenges, and to identify, optimise and recommend best practices.

Each application must address one of the following topics and can be submitted to the selected topic only.

Energy Efficiency in the Food Systems for a Green Transition

Available budget: Minimum NOK 24,9 million.

The intention is to fund at least two proposals under this topic, provided a sufficient number of proposals of a quality considered worthy of funding.

Project partners that apply for funding under this topic must be from the following countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, and Sweden. Partners from other countries may participate with their own funding.

Climate and Gender Perspectives

Available budget: Minimum NOK 13,8 million.

The intention is to fund at least one proposal under this topic, provided a sufficient number of proposals of a quality considered worthy of funding.

Project partners that apply for funding under this topic must be from the following countries: Finland, Iceland, Lithuania and Sweden. Partners from other countries may participate with their own funding.

Democratic Engagement and Citizen-Involvement in Green Transition

Available budget: Minimum NOK 48,1 million.

The intention is to fund at least four proposals under this topic, provided a sufficient number of proposals of a quality considered worthy of funding.

Project partners that apply for funding under this topic must be from the following countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden. Partners from other countries may participate with their own funding.

Funding

Available budget: NOK 137 million. Maximum amount of funding that may be sought: NOK 15 million.
